Nice to Èze by Moped: Everything You Need to Know

There are places on the French Riviera you visit because they're famous. And then there's Èze — which you visit because once you're there, you completely understand why everyone keeps talking about it. Perched 429 metres above the Mediterranean, this medieval hilltop village has one of the most dramatic views in Europe. And from Nice on a moped, you're there in twenty minutes.
🛣️ How to Get There
The direct route to Èze Village on a moped is the Moyenne Corniche (D6007). It passes right beside the village entrance at mid-altitude, halfway between the sea and the hilltops.
From Nice: follow signs for the Moyenne Corniche from the Port de Nice. The road climbs gradually, with increasingly spectacular views over the Bay of Villefranche as you go. After about 12 km, you reach Èze.
Allow 20 to 25 minutes in light traffic. A little longer in summer.
Accessible on both 50cc and 125cc — the Moyenne Corniche has no true motorway sections up to Èze, though it's dual-carriageway in places. Take extra care on those stretches if you're on a 50cc.
💡 Tip: just before reaching the village from Nice, look out for a small lay-by on your left. It offers a brilliant view of the rocky crag that Èze sits on — one of the best photos you'll take all day.
🅿️ Parking at Èze
Parking is paid but manageable — provided you arrive early.
- Car park, Place Charles de Gaulle: the main car park, conveniently placed at the entrance to the old village. €3.20 per hour (6am–8pm). A large new underground car park with over 300 spaces opened in 2023.
- Fragonard: the historic perfumery has free parking beside the factory, just a short walk from the village. A free factory tour comes with the parking — genuinely worth doing.
- Oppidum car park (Col d'Èze, Grande Corniche): €6 to €10 per day with a free shuttle running every 15 minutes down to the village. The best option in high season when the main car parks are full.
On a moped or scooter, you can often find street parking along the Moyenne Corniche for €1.50 per hour.
🏛️ What to Do in Èze Village
Èze is entirely pedestrianised. You explore on foot, wandering through cobbled lanes and vaulted passages. Allow 2 to 3 hours to visit at a comfortable pace.
The Exotic Garden: at the very top of the village, within the ruins of the old castle. A remarkable collection of cacti and succulents surrounds medieval stonework — and the panoramic view over Monaco Bay from up there is genuinely breathtaking. Paid entry (around €8).
The lanes and workshops: artists' studios, galleries and artisan perfumers line the narrow streets. Yes, it's touristy — but the setting is magical enough that it doesn't matter.
Fragonard and Galimard: two historic perfume houses have workshops in Èze. Free tours, and fascinating if you've never seen how perfume is made.
La Chèvre d'Or: a Michelin-starred hotel and restaurant tucked into the village walls, with a terrace overlooking the entire coastline. Book well in advance if you want lunch — and come prepared for the bill. For a sundowner drink, it's genuinely unforgettable.
🥾 The Nietzsche Path
The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche used to stay at Èze-sur-Mer by the sea and walk up to the village every day. The path that carries his name supposedly inspired parts of Thus Spoke Zarathustra — and once you've climbed it, you'll believe that extreme physical effort really might generate extraordinary thought.
The path connects Èze-sur-Mer at sea level to the hilltop village at 429 metres. The descent takes around 50 minutes; the ascent, 1 hour 30. It's a beautiful walk but a demanding one — and there's very little shade in summer.
On a moped, the sensible approach is to ride down to the coast, have a swim at Èze-sur-Mer, then ride back up. Nietzsche had no other option. You do.
🕐 When to Go
Èze receives millions of visitors each year for a village of 2,200 people. In July and August, the lanes are packed well before 11am.
Our recommendation: arrive before 9:30am in summer and you'll have the cobblestones almost to yourself for an hour. Or come in the late afternoon after 4pm — the light is better and the day-trippers are heading back.
In May, June, September and October, Èze is far more relaxed and enjoyable at any time of day.
🎯 Bonus: Continue to Monaco
Èze is only 9 km from Monaco via the Moyenne Corniche and the coast road. If you have another half day after your visit, it's the obvious next stop. Two of the French Riviera's most spectacular destinations in a single day — that's exactly what a moped is for.
