Safety Guide: Riding a Moped Safely on the French Riviera

At Rentascoot, your safety is our priority. Hiring a moped means you can fully enjoy the spectacular landscapes of the French Riviera — but always with care and respect for the rules of the road.
Here’s a practical guide to set off with peace of mind.
🔒 Essential and Recommended Equipment
Wearing a helmet and gloves is compulsory for both the rider and the passenger.
At Rentascoot, we provide an approved helmet and a pair of gloves free of charge.
Of course, you may use your own equipment if you prefer.
Closed shoes are strongly recommended. Unsuitable footwear (flip-flops, sandals, etc.) can hinder riding and result in a fine.
It’s also wise to wear trousers and a jacket: in case of a fall, these make all the difference in terms of protection.
⚙️ Before Setting Off
Before every ride, take a moment to check:
- The proper functioning of the brakes
- The condition of the tyres
- The mirrors and lights
Keep in mind: all Rentascoot mopeds are systematically checked before every hire to guarantee your safety and comfort.
🚦 Speed Limits to Observe
- In town (Nice, Cannes, Antibes, etc.): 30 to 50 km/h
- Dual carriageways: 70 km/h maximum, only for 125cc mopeds or above
50cc mopeds are limited to 45 km/h. Remember to set your GPS to “avoid motorways”, especially if heading to Monaco or Menton.
And of course:
❌ Riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited.
❌ Maximum of two people per moped.
⚡ Filtering: Stay Alert
Filtering between lanes is tolerated, but requires constant vigilance.
In town, it can save you a bit of time in traffic jams, but always keep an eye out for vehicles that may change lane unexpectedly.
On expressways, switch on your hazard lights and keep to an appropriate speed. Your safety remains the top priority.
🕒 Better to Arrive Late than Too Fast
Take your time reaching your destination.
It’s always better to arrive a few minutes late than to take unnecessary risks. Your safety is priceless.
🎧 One Last Important Rule
It is strictly forbidden to ride while wearing earphones.
All our mopeds come equipped (or can be, as an option) with a phone holder so you can use your GPS safely.
Don’t hesitate to ask for one when you collect your vehicle.
🚀 In Summary
Follow the rules, wear the right gear, and enjoy the freedom a moped offers — in complete safety.
The whole Rentascoot team wishes you an amazing ride on the French Riviera 🌴
