What Driver's License Do You Need to Rent a Scooter in France?

One of the most common questions we get at Rentascoot is some version of: "Wait, do I actually need a special license for this?"
The short answer is: it depends on the scooter. A 50cc is accessible to almost anyone with a car license. A 125cc requires a little more — but probably less than you'd expect. Let's break it down clearly.
🛵 Renting a 50cc Scooter — What You Need
Good news: if you have a regular car license (category B), you can ride a 50cc scooter in France. No motorcycle training required.
One nuance worth knowing: your car license must have been issued on or after January 1, 2013 for this to apply automatically. Licenses issued before that date may not include the AM category (moped authorization) unless you completed a separate moped training course at age 14.
In practice, if you're a tourist visiting from the US, Canada, Australia, or anywhere in the EU with a standard driver's license, you're covered for a 50cc. We'll ask to see it at pickup — that's it.
One firm rule: you must be at least 16 years old to ride a 50cc.
⚡ Renting a 125cc Scooter — Two Ways to Qualify
A 125cc opens up a lot more of the coast — faster highways, easier overtaking, and the ability to reach Monaco on the coastal road. Here's how to legally ride one:
Option 1 — A1 Motorcycle License
The A1 is a dedicated motorcycle license for engines up to 125cc and 11kW. It's recognized across the European Union and in most countries worldwide. If you have one, you're good to go anywhere — Nice, Monaco, Italy, no restrictions.
Option 2 — Car License (B) + 7-Hour Training Certificate
This is the French shortcut, and it's genuinely handy. If you hold a car license for at least 2 years and completed a practical 7-hour training course at an approved driving school, you receive a certificate that authorizes you to ride up to 125cc.
The catch — and this is important — this certificate is only valid in France. Not in Monaco, not in Italy, not elsewhere in Europe. If your trip takes you across the border, this option doesn't cover you.
🗺️ What About Monaco?
Monaco sits in a legal gray zone here. It's not part of the European Union and has its own traffic regulations. In practice, French authorities tolerate the B + 7h certificate for riding into Monaco, and we've never had a customer report an issue.
That said, if you're planning to ride into Monaco specifically, the cleanest solution is an A1 license — it removes any ambiguity entirely.
🌍 International Visitors — Does My License Work?
EU license holders: Yes, fully valid. A European category B license covers 50cc; A1 covers 125cc. The rules above apply exactly as written.
US, UK, Canadian, Australian licenses: A standard car license from these countries is treated as equivalent to a French category B for 50cc rentals in France. For a 125cc, you'd need either an international motorcycle endorsement or an A1 equivalent from your home country.
Important: If your license is not in the Latin alphabet (Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, etc.), you'll need an International Driving Permit alongside it. We recommend having one regardless — French law enforcement appreciates the paper trail.

🙋 What If I'm Not Sure?
Just ask us. We check licenses every day and we'll tell you in 30 seconds whether you're good to go. We'd much rather sort this out before you book than turn you away at pickup — that's no fun for anyone.
You can reach us via the booking page, WhatsApp, or email. Our team speaks English, French, Italian, Russian and Dutch — so whatever's easiest for you.
🚀 Bottom Line
Most people visiting Nice already have everything they need. A car license gets you on a 50cc immediately. Add an A1 or the 7-hour certificate and a 125cc is yours. The French Riviera is waiting — don't let a paperwork question stop you from exploring it on two wheels.
The whole Rentascoot team is happy to help you figure out the right scooter for your license. See you on the road 🌴
