Nice to Èze by Scooter: Everything You Need to Know

Nice to Èze by Scooter: Everything You Need to Know

There are places on the French Riviera you visit because they're famous. And then there's Èze — which you visit because once you're there, you completely get why everyone keeps talking about it. Perched 429 meters above the Mediterranean, this medieval hilltop village has one of the most dramatic views in Europe. And from Nice on a scooter, you're there in twenty minutes.

🛣️ How to Get There

The direct route to Èze Village by scooter is the Moyenne Corniche (D6007). It passes right by the village entrance at mid-altitude, halfway between the sea and the hilltops.

From Nice: follow signs for the Moyenne Corniche from the Port de Nice. The road climbs gradually, with increasingly incredible views over the Bay of Villefranche as you go. After about 12 km, you arrive at Èze.

Allow 20 to 25 minutes in light traffic. A bit longer in summer.

Works on both 50cc and 125cc — the Moyenne Corniche has no highway sections up to Èze, though it's multi-lane in places. Take extra care on those stretches if you're on a 50cc.

💡 Tip: just before reaching the village from Nice, watch for a small pullout on your left. It gives you a stunning view of the rocky crag Èze sits on — one of the best photos you'll take all day.

🅿️ Parking at Èze

Parking is paid but very manageable — as long as you get there early.

  • Parking lot, Place Charles de Gaulle: the main lot, right at the entrance to the old village. €3.20 per hour (6am–8pm). A new underground garage with 300+ spaces opened in 2023.
  • Fragonard: the historic perfumery has free parking next to the factory, a short walk from the village. You get a free factory tour with the parking — genuinely interesting.
  • Oppidum parking (Col d'Èze, Grande Corniche): €6 to €10 per day with a free shuttle running every 15 minutes down to the village. The best option in peak season when everything else is full.

On a scooter, you can often find spots along the Moyenne Corniche roadside for €1.50 per hour.

🏛️ What to Do in Èze Village

Èze is completely car-free. You explore entirely on foot, wandering through cobblestone alleys and vaulted passages. Plan on 2 to 3 hours to visit at a relaxed pace.

The Exotic Garden: at the very top of the village, set within the ruins of the old castle. A stunning collection of cacti and succulents surrounds medieval stonework — and the panoramic view over Monaco Bay from up there is genuinely jaw-dropping. Paid admission (around €8).

The lanes and workshops: artists' studios, galleries and artisan perfumers line the narrow streets. Touristy? Sure. But the setting is beautiful enough that it really doesn't matter.

Fragonard and Galimard: two legendary perfume houses have workshops in Èze. Free tours, and worth doing if you've never seen how perfume is crafted.

La Chèvre d'Or: a Michelin-starred hotel and restaurant tucked into the village walls, with a terrace overlooking the entire coastline. Reserve well in advance if you want lunch — and come ready for a splurge. For a sunset cocktail, it's an experience you won't forget.

🥾 The Nietzsche Path

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche used to stay down at Èze-sur-Mer by the water and hike up to the village every single day. The path named after him supposedly inspired parts of Thus Spoke Zarathustra — and once you've done the climb yourself, you'll believe that physical suffering really can produce great ideas.

The path connects Èze-sur-Mer at sea level to the hilltop village at 429 meters. Going down takes around 50 minutes; going up, 1 hour 30. It's a gorgeous trail but a demanding one — and barely any shade in summer.

On a scooter, the smart move is to ride down to the coast, take a swim at Èze-sur-Mer, then ride back up. Nietzsche had no other option. You do.

🕐 When to Go

Èze draws millions of visitors a year to a village of 2,200 people. In July and August, the lanes are crowded well before 11am.

Our recommendation: arrive before 9:30am in summer and you'll have the cobblestones almost to yourself for a solid hour. Or come late afternoon after 4pm — the light is better and the day-trippers are already heading back.

In May, June, September and October, Èze is far more relaxed and enjoyable at any time of day.

🎯 Bonus: Keep Going to Monaco

Èze is only 9 km from Monaco via the Moyenne Corniche and the coast road. If you have another half day left after your visit, continuing to Monaco is a no-brainer. Two of the French Riviera's most incredible destinations in one single day — that's exactly what having a scooter is for.
